Santa Claus or St Nick is a very popular Christmas Character. He is believed to give out toys to children every Christmas. Many Christmas stories are told about him living in the North Pole together with his wife, Mrs. Claus and lots of elves called Santa’s Little Helpers for they help Santa in making toys for children around the world. Santa Claus distributes the gifts by climbing down the chimney and placing the presents inside every child’s Christmas Stockings.
It is also said that Santa Claus rides a flying sleigh pulled by reindeers. Many of us are familiar with the Christmas Carol, Rudolf the Red Nosed Reindeer, where Rudolf lead Santa’s sleigh during a foggy Christmas Eve. But not of us are familiar with the names of Santa’s other reindeers.
The common names of Santa Claus’ Reindeers came from the 1823 poem A Visit from St. Nicholas.
Below are some parts of the poem by Clement C. Moore, which indicates the names of the Original reindeers of Santa. Get to know all the names of Santa’s reindeers them through this list!
when, what to my wondering eyes should appear,
but a miniature sleigh, and eight tiny rein-deer,
with a little old driver, so lively and quick,
I knew in a moment it must be St. Nick.
More rapid than eagles his coursers they came,
And he whistled, and shouted, and call’d them by name:
“Now, Dasher! Now, Dancer! Now, Prancer, and Vixen!
“On, Comet! On, Cupid! On, Donder and Blitzen!
“To the top of the porch! to the top of the wall!
“Now dash away! dash away! dash away all!”
As dry leaves that before the wild hurricane fly,
When they meet with an obstacle, mount to the sky;
So up to the house-top the coursers they flew,
There you have it folks, the 8 names of the original reindeers of Santa Claus- Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Donder and Blitzen.
Some Christmas TV shows and Christmas Carols also gives rise to other reindeers such as in the song “ Donde Esta Santa Claus” where the names of Pancho and Pedro are added.
